Protect your pet from Heartworm and parasites. Veterinarians in Texas recommend year-round heart worm prevention due to our relatively mild winters. Heartworm is transmitted to pets from the bite of an infected mosquito. In unprotected dogs and cats, it takes 6 months for the larvae from the bite of an infected mosquito to reach the heart and become adult heartworms. Since mosquitoes can come into the house, inside pets are at risk as well. Annual testing in dogs is recommended. Clinical signs of heartworm in dogs include coughing, weight loss and exercise intolerance. In cats, the clinical signs are more subtle and include vomiting, coughing, and labored breathing.
There are many different types of heart worm preventatives. Most are combination products that prevent heartworm and intestinal parasites such as roundworms and hookworms. Some of the products are even protective against fleas and ticks. Most products are given monthly in either a tablet, a chewable treat or a topical form.
Angel Parkway Pet Hospital maintains a full pharmacy of veterinary prescription medications and retail items (such as shampoos, vitamins, flea and tick medications etc.) as well as Hill’s Science Diet and Hill’s Prescription Diet foods at reasonable prices. As an added bonus, many drug manufacturers offer incentives at the time of purchase such as cash rebates or a free dose of medication based on age (Revolution, Frontline Gold or Nexgard). If you choose to purchase a 12 month supply of the Heartgard your pet’s picture will be featured on our “Protected Pet Posse” wall of fame!
